Musashi self-portrait, public domain.

Why are some of the teachings in Miyamoto Musashi’s Gorin no Sho difficult to ascertain?

First, the subtle and nuanced nature of the Japanese language creates questions about translation and interpretation, even among native Japanese speakers.

Second, while Gorin no Sho has become a best seller with multiple translations and interpretations, it was initially not intended for public consumption. Musashi brushed the five scrolls for his disciples, noting that augmenting oral teachings and combat experience would elucidate the meaning behind the words.

Third, Japanese Martial arts are transmitted through several mechanisms, including physical and psychological exercise, written and spoken language, the example provided by the instructor, and the tradition itself. Realizing Musashi's ultimate teachings is difficult without direct access to these modes of instruction.

Fourth, In 1645, these were highly guarded secrets, akin to classified military information today. If another swordsman could ascertain what you would do and how you would do it, they could use this information to defeat you. Musashi was likely mindful of this and utilized obfuscation while pointing to the essence in his writings.

Why is the knowledge transmitted in Gorin No Sho highly prized?

The teachings in Gorin no Sho (The Book of Five Rings) are highly prized, as they were obtained on the ragged edge of life. Musashi is believed to have participated in over 60 duels and several significant battles. Miyamoto Musashi dedicated himself to The Way and studied conflict, strategy, and what is required to perform in such dire circumstances. Before he died in 1645, he wrote these hard-won lessons down in 5 scrolls.

Is Gorin no Sho a book on strategy?

While the central theme of Gorin no Sho is not about strategy in general, it does address the strategy of Niten Ichi-ryu. In the author's own words, the purpose of the text is to "write down, for the first time, the culmination of what I have learned over many years of austere training."

Why are there so many versions of this book by different authors?

Authors may feel a need or responsibility to share their knowledge, and people continue to search for a version that will help them understand and assimilate Musashi's teachings.

What qualifies Joseph Simms to lead this exploration if he has never studied the Niten Ichi-ryū, and the text contains obfuscated teachings?

The wellspring from which Musashi's teachings flow are primordial universal truths Musashi realized through his austere training, including engaging in conflict multiple times. These realizations are beyond "ownership."

Musashi then created a method to transmit that which is beyond description and must be realized for oneself, along with his more tangible teachings on strategy and tactics. Musashi was a very rare individual, and this level of realization and skill was not common among the samurai. Perhaps 1 percent, of 1 percent, of 1 percent realized this level of understanding--perhaps.

Joseph Simms will lead an exploration and analysis of Musashi's teachings, bringing to bear his experience garnered from over three and a half decades studying conflict, strategy, and performance and his experience in two great martial traditions: the swordsmanship of the Ittō Tenshin-ryū and the United States Marine Corps.

Meet The Instructor

Joseph Simms

Joseph Simms' knowledge of conflict, strategy, and performance is grounded in direct experience ranging from the United States Marine Corps to the study and instruction of traditional Japanese schools of strategy and swordsmanship, and from being taken hostage aboard a Turkish airliner to working in corporate security, risk management, and entrepreneurship.

What began more than thirty-six years ago, growing out of an undefinable sense of restlessness and longing for purpose, direction, and fulfillment, continues professionally today.

Joseph is tasked with the dissemination and continuity of three martial traditions originating from Japan, the Ittō Tenshin-ryū®, Yamate-ryū®, and Goseki-ryu® Aiki Heihō. A component of this tasking is broadly sharing these traditions' deep and rich teachings on conflict, strategy, and human performance.

These teachings form the locus from which he works, whether consulting for businesses in strategy, conflict, or human performance, working with attorneys as an expert in human behavior under conflict, or serving as an adjunct professor at George Washington University.
