A Technique to Control Fear

Mr. Schutz and Void.jpg

Introduction

People around the world have performed and will continue to act in situations and conditions that try the human spirit.

Should you find yourself facing fear, here is a simple, useful tool to control it, and act!  (It is equally effective dealing with the fears and anxieties of everyday life.)

Origin

This teaching is from the Itto Tenshin-ryu, a traditional Japanese school of strategy and swordsmanship.

It is also discussed briefly in The Way and The Power, by Fredrick Lovret

Maxim

“When afraid, clench your belly and step forward!”

Action

  1. Take a slow deep abdominal breath,

  2. Exhale and tighten the belly,

  3. Take a step forward.

Explanation

Diaphragmatic breathing helps to calm and center us physiologically and psychologically.

We feel fear in our gut. Something about tightening the abdominal muscles helps us control this.

Finally, our natural reaction is to move away from fear (again physically and mentally); taking a step forward can have a profound effect on the spirit.

Conclusion

The ability to overcome fear and anxiety is fundamental to success in life. The ability to act in a moment or extended time of crisis may save lives.
